The bris (circumcision) is a well known Jewish ritual, exercised on the
8th day of a Jewish boy's life. The practice commemorates the covenant
that Abraham made with God, cutting off his penile foreskin as a gesture
of faith. What is less known about the ritual is that following the
incision, the circumciser (the Mohel) gargles alcohol around the infant's
circumcised penis in an effort to disinfect the wounded area. He literally
sticks the baby's penis in his mouth and gargles. True story. The ritual
is carried out exactly as it was in the time of our biblical forefathers,
because tradition is very important to Jews. This song is about my own
experience as a Jewish infant, and the gargling that transpired around my
bleeding penis.
