For My Foreskin
By Jess Grant

Every time that I go to the bathroom to take a pee
I’m holding the evidence of what they did to me
They butchered my penis and frankly just between us
It makes me kind of sad to see
My foreskin’s gone, I’m not the man I used to be

It’s tradition with many a culture to circumcise
And it’s still what many a doctor will advise
But it makes me kind of sick to think about how quick
They’ll mutilate a man for life
They say that it’s for health but I think that’s a pack of lies

Violence and sex, they seem to go hand in hand
Why that is I think I finally understand
When a fellow’s just a boy, doesn’t matter if he’s goy
They’ll chop it off as quick as they can
That’s the beauty, that’s the joy, that’s the legacy of being a man

My mother is Jewish, my uncle and my cousins are too
And as far as the Nazis are concerned I’d probably be a Jew
But I reject all religions based on superstition
Don’t count me ‘mong the chosen few
If I ever have a boy I’ll tell you what I’m going to do

I’ll say "son, we look a little different, you and I
You’ve got an extra piece of flesh, let me tell you why
We left your body intact and that’s a natural fact
We didn’t want to see you cry
You’ll have to keep it clean but otherwise you’ll be just fine"

Every time that I go to the bathroom to take a pee
I’m holding the evidence of what they did to me
They butchered my penis and frankly just between us
It makes me kind of sad to see
My foreskin’s gone, I’m not the man I used to be

Notes on singer/songwriter Jess Grant:

Jess Grant writes songs that provoke and amuse, fusing lyrical intensity with diverse pop styles and working-class ethics. Raised by a father who's tone-deaf and a mother who called sheet music "those little black dots with lines," Jess had to look elsewhere for musical inspiration. He was drawn to the stories sung by folk singers like Ed McCurdy, the Kingston Trio, Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez and the Weavers.
