Frequently asked questions
FAQ: Shouldn't Christians follow the old testament covenant of
circumcision?
A: Ninety percent of the world's
Christians don't think so. In December of 2003 Time Magazine ran a
story about renewed interest in the "Lost" gospels of
Christianity, like the Gospels of Thomas.
Gospel of Thomas 53 concurs with many messages from the traditional
gospels and new testament (Romans 2:29, Romans 3:30, Acts 15:10, I Corinthians 7:18,
I Corinthians 12:18, Galatians 5:6, Galatians 5:2, Galatians 6:15, Philippians 3:2,
Colossians 2:12, Matthew 9:12) which for some reason are "lost" on
Americans.
All of these passages make it clear that circumcision is
not part of Christianity, yet 55% of American infant boys are
mutilated at birth. The intact men of the world
have no special health or hygiene problems. No national medical
organization in the world recommends routine circumcision, and
neither does Christian doctrine.
For Catholics, Pope Pius XII
affirmed in 1952: "From a moral point of view, circumcision is permissible if, in accordance with therapeutic principles, it prevents a disease that
cannot be countered in any other way" (Discorsi e messaggi radiodiffusi, t. XIV, Rome 1952, s. 328-329).
The present Catechism of the Catholic Church includes Item 2297: Respect for bodily integrity
"... Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intended
amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral
law."
The Book of Mormon instructs Latter Day Saints:
"Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer, your Lord
and your God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the
righteous but sinners to repentance; the whole need no
physician, but they that are sick; wherefore, little children
are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore
the curse of Adam is taken from them in me, that it hath no
power over them; and the law of circumcision is done away in
me." - Moroni 8:8
Regardless of your creed, America is founded on religious
freedom. While Americans may think that gives them the right to have
their
child circumcised, it doesn't. Your child has the right to religious
freedom, too, but by amputating healthy tissue, you immorally take away
that right. Even the old testament says that someone who is
missing a body part may not approach the altar of the lord (Lev 21:18-23). Protect HIS religious freedom; leave him
intact.
